Onika Tanya Maraj was born in Trinidad on December 8, 1984. She moved to Southside Jamaica Queens, New York when she was five. Her father drank heavily, did drugs, and tried to kill her mother by setting the house on fire. Onika graduated from LaGuardia High School, a school specializing in music and visual and performing arts.
